"Color & Canon" Opens March 23

[Garden City, KS] March 9, 2020 -- The Mercer Gallery at Garden City Community College is pleased to present its next art exhibit, "Color & Canon," starting March 23, 2020.

The show will feature the work of Nick Geankoplis, a professor who leads the ceramics program at Kansas State University, and Flor Widmar, a resident ceramic artist also at KSU.

Both artists' work will be on display in the Mercer Gallery through April 24. The gallery show concludes with an artist demonstration on this date from 1 to 4 p.m. in room 1413 of the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building, followed by an artist reception from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Mercer Gallery. Light refreshments will be provided at the reception.

Widmar, born in California but raised in Chihuahua, Mexico, earned her B.F.A. from Sierra Nevada College. Her work has been featured in various solo and group exhibitions both domestically and internationally, including Denmark and Japan.

She makes use of repetition in her work, where she repeats the same elements, building new forms each time, according to the artist.

"I explore ideas and concepts by making series, groups, and multiples in different themes and variations," Widmar said. "The slight variation between the repeated elements draws the viewer in, as they discover the unexpected in the familiar."

Geankoplis, a practicing artist in addition to educator, has been a part of the ceramics world for the better part of two decades, taking his work and research to nearly a dozen countries.

After earning his B.F.A. also from Sierra Neveda College and M.F.A. from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Geankoplis spent four years as an artist and visiting international professor teaching ceramic design for industry at the prestigious China Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing.

Since returning from China, Geankoplis has dedicated himself to both the ceramics program at KSU and his own creative practice, which takes formal cues from Chinese landscape paintings for his design layouts.

The Mercer Gallery is open Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information contact Michael Knutson, gallery director, at michael.knutson@gcccks.edu. The gallery is open to the public, and admission is always free.
