Facilities Remain Closed While Operations Continue Virtually
[Garden City, KS] May 4, 2020 -- Garden City Community College continues to operate virtually while complying with both a local public health order and re-opening guidelines governed by the state.
Campus facilities, which have remained closed to the public since March 23 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, continue to be closed while college officials review and improve safety and health procedures in anticipation of a late spring or summer re-opening date.
Derek Ramos, dean of physical planning and facilities management, said GCCC follows safety and health protocols set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to make campus as safe as possible and will continue doing so until a reopening date is determined.
Currently, campus access is restricted to a small number of personnel and only to areas required for work duties.
"Our top priority is the safety, health and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and community," Ramos said. "We are adapting our methods daily as the situation changes to ensure that the campus is ready when we reopen."
Ramos said some of those campus safety improvements include (but are not limited to):
- Purchase of plexiglass panels for all personnel who encounter students and community members. These will be used as a barrier to protect staff.
- Purchase and use of ultraviolet-C lamps and wands to treat the air and neutralize pathogens on surfaces.
- Purchase of appropriate disinfectant and sprayer when supplies replenish.
- Solicitation of services from professional cleaners to assist with sanitation in campus housing and other campus facilities.
"Our sanitation techniques are constantly evolving. We continue to sterilize classrooms, offices, hallways, entry ways and computer labs," Ramos added.
While GCCC’s physical doors are closed to public access, all student and community services including enrollment, advising, instruction, and more, continue to operate online.
Both Summer 2020 and Fall 2020 enrollment is now open to all students. Current GCCC students can contact their advisors by phone, email or videoconference to enroll. A publicly-accessible employee directory is available online. In addition to phone and email, an advising appointment can also be requested online, as well.
New students can start the enrollment process by completing a free admissions application online. Additionally, prospective students can schedule a personalized campus tour online.
