Open Auditions for “Sondheim Tribute Revue”
Garden City Community College is holding open auditions for a production featuring a night of musical numbers from the celebrated Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim, the SONDHEIM TRIBUTE REVUE, next Friday March 7th, from 6:00 – 10:00pm in the KCB Bank Auditorium, Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building.
“We are so excited to be teaming up with our fantastic Department of Music to produce this event,” says Dr. Joshua Kelly, who will be directing the production. “With vocal direction from Sean Boller, music direction from Makenzi Johnson, and accompaniment from Maria Loving, all of whom are incredibly talented and whose work has been loved on campus for some time—I couldn’t be more ready to get to work with such a fabulous artistic team.”
Anyone in the community and on campus is welcome to audition. The performance will feature a large ensemble, several small group numbers (duets, trios, etc.,) and a handful of principal soloist performers. Those who are interested in auditioning should prepare sixteen bars of any number with music and lyrics written by Stephen Sondheim and bring along sheet music for the accompanist. A signup sheet posted at auditions will determine singing order, and all auditionees should anticipate staying through the evening to participate in ensemble numbers after individual auditions are finished.
Rehearsals will be scheduled intermittently by performer availability over the next few weeks, with the entire cast called for more consistent rehearsals closer to the performance dates, beginning with music rehearsals and moving into staging in April. Performance dates for the show will be April 24-26 and May 1-3 at 7:00pm.
“With such beloved shows like SWEENEY TODD, INTO THE WOODS, ASSASSINS, MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, and SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, we’re certain that a huge portion of the community will be delighted to hear an evening of this music,” says Kelly. “And we are looking forward to creating a night of beautiful voices, orchestration, and acting to celebrate the lasting legacy of Sondheim.”
