Mercer Gallery Hosts “Sisters: The Art of Judy Scott and Amy Pilger” Exhibition

[Garden City, KS] November 14, 2024 -- The Mercer Gallery, located in the Joyce Fine Arts building at Garden City Community College, will present an exhibition titled “Sisters: The Art of Judy Scott and Amy Pilger” from November 8 through December 13, showcasing over 25 unique pieces by artists and sisters Judy Scott and Amy Pilger, including a special collaborative work created by both.

Despite growing up together, Scott and Pilger developed distinct artistic styles. Scott favors a warm color palette, while Pilger is drawn to cooler tones. Both sisters attribute their creativity to their mother. “My experience with creativity was a mother who could put together something wonderful from nothing,” Scott shares. Pilger adds, “I had a mother who taught me a layer of contact paper can improve anything.”

Judy Scott is celebrated as a southwestern regional treasure, having taught art at Ulysses High School from 1963 to 2003. In retirement, she became a “working” artist, producing a remarkable collection of artwork inspired by the western Kansas landscape and the supportive communities of Lakin and Ulysses. Scott holds a Master’s in Ceramics from Fort Hays State University and has also taught and taken classes at Garden City Community College over the years.

Amy Pilger, who spent much of her life in Colorado and now resides in Green Valley, Arizona, draws inspiration from her surroundings, saying, “I see shape, lines, pattern, texture, and color every place I look.”

An Artist Reception took place on Friday, November 8, from 2 to 4 p.m., where Scott greeted visitors and shared insights into her work while guests enjoyed refreshments.

The Mercer Gallery is open Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery will be closed for Thanksgiving Break from November 25 to November 29.
