GCCC Music Department Hosts Annual KMEA Learning Day 2024
[Garden City, KS] October 3, 2024 -- The Garden City Community College Music Department successfully hosted the annual Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) Learning Day on October 2, 2024. The event, held on the GCCC campus, brought together 464 high school music students from 17 schools across Western Kansas.
The KMEA Learning Day is designed to help prepare students for district and state honor ensemble auditions, offering guidance and rehearsal opportunities across various musical disciplines. Throughout the day, music instructors from GCCC and Fort Hays State University worked closely with students, providing hands-on instruction and support in choir, band, and orchestra.
“Students were able to connect with fellow musicians from nearby schools, working together to sharpen their abilities ahead of upcoming auditions,” said Sean Boller, GCCC Associate Professor of Vocal Music and Choir Director. “We sincerely appreciate the support from our administration in hosting this event and would like to extend a special thank you to President Ruda and our Admissions team for speaking to the students.”
In addition to rehearsing, students attended sessions led by GCCC music faculty, where they learned valuable practice techniques, tips for successful auditions, and explored the various music programs offered at GCCC.
The event continues to play a key role in nurturing the next generation of musicians in the region, further solidifying GCCC’s commitment to supporting the arts.
