GCCC Criminal Justice Competition Team Excels at 2024 Regionals

[Garden City, KS] October 17, 2024 –  The Garden City Community College Criminal Justice Competition Team (TEL: Tau Epsilon Lambda), a chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association (ACJA), hosted the Region III competition from October 11-13. The event featured students and faculty competing in categories such as Crime Scene Investigation, Firearms, Written Testing, and Physical Agility.

The competition brought four university teams to campus, with GCCC as the only community college represented. Despite facing larger and more experienced teams, GCCC proudly placed in every category, thanks to the hard work and dedication of its team members. The results are as follows:

Written Testing:

- Olivia Wilds – 2nd Place, Criminal Law, Lower Division

- Brandy Unruh – 3rd Place, Criminal Law, Professional Division

- Nathali Grijalva – 1st Place, ACJA Knowledge, Lower Division

- Brandy Unruh – 2nd Place, Juvenile Justice, Professional Division

- Brandy Unruh – 2nd Place, Police Administration, Professional Division

Physical Agility:

- Nathali Grijalva – 1st Place, Female, Age 26-35

- Julian Francis – 1st Place, Male, Age 18-25

- Brandy Unruh – 1st Place, Female, Age 36+

Crime Scene Investigation (Team):

- Kash Sheets, Olivia Wilds, Nathali Grijalva – 1st Place, Lower Division

Firearms (Individual):

- Ashley Osegueda – 3rd Place, Lower Division

- Kash Sheets – 2nd Place, Lower Division

- Randy Ralston – 1st Place, Professional Division

Firearms Team:

- Leslie Jaco, Nathali Grijalva, Anabel Orrantia – 3rd Place, Lower Division

- Ashley Osegueda, Julian Francis, Kash Sheets – 1st Place, Lower Division

- Randy Ralston, Robert Scrivner, Brandy Unruh – 2nd Place, Professional Division

"We are extremely proud of our team for their outstanding performance and dedication," said Brandy Unruh, GCCC Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Public Safety. "Our students gave up their Fall Break to compete, and their efforts and achievements are a testament to their hard work."

GCCC extends its gratitude to the Garden City Police Department, Finney County Sheriff's Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, GCCC Campus Police, and many other supporters, including Dave and Marsha Rupp, Rita Shumate, Connie Bonwell, Mark Scheopner, Brett Forgy, and several former Criminal Justice students, for their invaluable assistance in making the event possible.
