GCCC Board of Trustees Meeting Recap January 14, 2025

[Garden City, KS] January 15, 2025 -- The Garden City Community College Board of Trustees met during a regularly scheduled meeting on January 14, 2025, in the Omar D. Angeles Endowment Room at GCCC.

The Board elected new officers during its annual organization meeting. Shanda Smith was elected Chair, and David Rupp was elected Vice-Chair while continuing his role as the Economic Development Corporation Representative. Dr. Merilyn Douglass was elected to serve as the KACC Representative and the Broncbuster Athletic Association Representative.

The Board approved a new Community Healthcare Worker (CHW) program, representing a significant advancement in addressing healthcare needs across Kansas. This 10-credit online program includes eight online classroom instruction credits and two service learning credits, equipping students to become Certified Kansas Community Health Workers. These professionals serve as essential liaisons and advocates, working to promote, maintain, and enhance individual and community health. With CHW services now billable in Kansas, demand for trained professionals in this field is expected to rise. The program was developed in collaboration with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Kansas Community Healthcare Worker Coalition, and local partnerships such as LiveWell Finney County. Pending Kansas Board of Regents approval, the program is set to begin during the Spring 2025 semester.

One executive session was held, and no action was taken.

The next meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the Omar D. Angeles Endowment Room in the Beth Tedrow Student Center, Garden City Community College Campus. Meetings will now take place on the third Tuesday of each month through May 2025, unless otherwise announced.
