GCCC Announces 2023-2024 Ambassador Scholars
[Garden City, KS] March 21, 2023 -- Garden City Community College is excited to announce the selection of the 2023-2024 Ambassador Scholars: Roxy Stone (Southwestern Heights High School), Jaxton Gallegos (Holcomb High School), and Carly Lang (Hays High School).
An Ambassador Scholar is a prestigious scholarship accolade based on academic achievement, school and community service, and other important criteria. Ambassador Scholars receive a $2,400 annual scholarship awarded for their two-year term. Ambassadors assist the GCCC President's Office and the GCCC Endowment Association Office throughout the year with various tasks and events on campus.
This annual award is available to incoming freshmen who've been recommended by their high school counselor. Each applicant must submit a comprehensive application and complete a thorough personal interview process. Seven area high school seniors with an intent to attend GCCC were interviewed by a panel in early March. Generally, two students are selected as Ambassador Scholars, however, this year's pool of applicants was exceptional.
"Every year, I am blown away by the talent and skills these students display, as well as their involvement, time management, and leadership. This year was no different," said Dr. Ruda, GCCC President. "In the past, we have selected two ambassador students each year. With the talent and strength of this year's candidates, we ended up selecting three students: Ms. Stone, Ms. Lang, and Mr. Gallegos. We are excited to see them continue their success at GCCC this fall."
Roxy Stone of Plains, Kansas, will soon graduate from Southwestern Heights High School. She holds a 3.99 GPA while participating in STUCO, National Honor Society, KAY, band, pep & jazz band, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, FCCLA, volleyball, basketball, softball, and powerlifting. She plans to earn her associate degree from GCCC, bachelor's from FHSU, and become a nurse practitioner specializing in pediatrics.

He holds a 3.9 GPA while participating in All In team, show choir, first chair clarinet in band, Eco club, student rep in StuCo, and a leader in 620 (youth-led ministry group). Gallegos also volunteers at the humane society, plays keys for worship, and helps during youth group at his church. Gallegos is on track to be the first in his immediate family to graduate college with a bachelor's or above.
Carly Lang of Hays, Kansas, will soon graduate from Hays High School. She holds a 3.85 GPA while being team captain in volleyball and track and being a part of the leadership team, class representative of Spirit Club, and on the WAC All-American team.
