GCCC Alumni Spotlight: Audrey Rupp

[Garden City, KS] April 2, 2025 – For Audrey Rupp, choosing Garden City Community College was a practical decision that set the foundation for her future success. Hailing from Tribune, Kansas, she sought an affordable way to begin her higher education while staying close to home. “I appreciated the smaller class sizes and the close proximity to my hometown,” she shared.

During her time at GCCC, Audrey balanced a demanding schedule, working at Accelacare Physical Therapy and Sam’s Club while actively participating in Phi Theta Kappa. Her dedication earned her a spot in the prestigious All-Kansas Academic Team. Reflecting on her experience, she emphasized the significance of time management. “The most important thing I learned during my time at GCCC was the value of time management. Balancing coursework, a full-time job, and personal commitments taught me how to stay organized and maximize my efficiency.”

In 2011, Audrey graduated from GCCC with an Associate in Science and continued her education at Fort Hays State University. There, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Tourism and Hospitality Management and became a member of Eta Sigma Delta, the International Hospitality and Tourism Management Honor Society. She credits GCCC for preparing her for this next chapter. “GCCC played an important role in shaping my academic and career goals, providing me the support and resources to succeed and confidently continue my education at Fort Hays State University.”

Today, Audrey serves as the District Manager for HorseThief Reservoir in Jetmore, Kansas, overseeing operations, maintenance, and visitor experiences at the park. “I’m committed to providing visitors with a safe and enjoyable experience while supporting the HorseThief Reservoir Board’s mission and promoting its growth for future generations,” she said.

Her passion for hospitality and recreation was ignited by her first job at Barrel Spring Hunt Club in Tribune. “That experience helped me realize the reward of having a passion and career come together. Since then, I’ve developed a deeper appreciation for the true meaning of hospitality and the fulfillment that comes from serving others. My appreciation for parks and recreation has only grown, as I’ve come to value the connection between nature, tourism, and hospitality.” Audrey remains deeply engaged in her community and the parks and recreation industry, striving to make HorseThief Reservoir and Southwest Kansas a destination for visitors to explore and experience.

To current and prospective students, she offers this advice: “Be engaged on campus and in the community. Explore extracurriculars, volunteer with local organizations, or seek out employment opportunities in the community. The connections you make now can lead to future career opportunities, professional references, and lifelong friendships.”

Garden City Community College is proud to have been a part of Audrey’s inspiring journey—a testament to the power of education, perseverance, and passion.
