BOT Hears Reviews for Chemistry, Criminal Justice Programs and Registrar Department
[Garden City, KS] August 24, 2022 -- The Garden City Community College Board of Trustees heard two academic program reviews and one non-academic department review during the regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, August 23, 2022.
Two academic program reviews were presented from the Chemistry and Criminal Justice programs, as well as a non-academic department review from the Registrar's office. The reviews featured a comprehensive look at outcomes, assessment measures, staff/faculty, resources, and more. On a rotating schedule, each department completes a program/department review every five years as part of ongoing Strategic Planning at GCCC.
Additionally, the Board heard a presentation from GCCC Administration on consideration to support a Community Facilities and Needs Assessment Request for Proposal (RFP). GCCC has been invited to join a Community Task Force comprised of Finney County taxing entities and Chair Douglass and President Ruda will represent the college. This group has been convened to discuss and review projects in the community specific to conventions, exhibitions, performing arts, or civic center space. The first step is for a feasibility study to be completed, and the GCCC Trustees voted to approve to support the Task Force proceeding to seek proposals through the RFP. There is no cost of financial obligation for GCCC at this time.
The Board also heard an update regarding the Title V STEM Grant from Chuck Pfeiffer, Grant Project Manager and Dean of Technical Education. Through this 5-year, $5 million grant from the Department of Education, three new programs will be added (Cybersecurity, Robotics, and Crop Production) as well as two faculty and two staff positions. The grant also provides funding to complete an addition to the north side of the Warren Fouse Science and Math building to add over 10,000 square feet of learning space for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This addition, named the GCCC STEM Success Center, broke ground this summer and is on schedule. Mr. Pfeifer shared that the Title V program is now fully staffed, has completed the year one objectives, and is in the process of setting up the new programs. Additionally, Title V successfully held the first STEM summer camp in July, where ten area students spent three days on-campus learning aerodynamics, coding, and flying drones. The next major project for Title V will be the installation of a campus greenhouse that goes in conjunction with the Crop Production program.
The next meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at 6 p.m. in the Logan Aviation Endowment Room inside the Beth Tedrow Student Center at GCCC.
