BOT Approves Stadium Lighting, Auditorium Seating Upgrades

[Garden City, KS] May 12, 2021 -- The Garden City Community College Board of Trustees approved various contracts for campus enhancement and addressing deferred maintenance projects during the regularly scheduled meeting on May 11th.

The Board of Trustees approved a contract to replace all eight light poles at Williams Stadium.  The new light poles will be 80' steel pole installations with attached LED fixtures.  By switching to LED fixtures, GCCC will realize energy savings and reduce light pollution in the surrounding neighborhood.

Next, a contract was approved to update all seating in the JOYCE Fine Arts Auditorium.  The current 300 auditorium chairs will be replaced with new Irwin Seating Company marquee chairs, which are built for comfort as well as heavy commercial use.  The plan also includes updating the paint, flooring, and lighting in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

Also approved was a new orientation software to be implemented in partnership with Advantage Design Group. GCCC will implement the new online orientation software module to assist in informing students regarding services, policies, and procedures at GCCC as well as informing of state and federal mandates.  The software will be implemented to assist in creating a better onboarding experience for students and enhancing the retention of students through more informed information sharing processes.

The BOT members also approved to enter a five-year contract renewal with Great Western Dining.  The new five-year contract will commence on July 1, 2021.  As part of the contract, board rates will increase by 3% and GCCC and Great Western Dining have agreed to a $50,000 equipment maintenance fund investment by Great Western Dining to assist in upgrades and updates to the kitchen and cafeteria.

Finally, a resolution passed to authorize the notice of sale of lease-purchase agreement certificates of participation totaling approximately $4,150,000.  This certificate of participation will finance various deferred maintenance projects at GCCC including updates to student housing restrooms and roofs, transportation building, boiler, hydronic water pipe, tunnel caps, dishwasher in cafeteria, rodeo ground updates, and updates to the Fine Arts Auditorium.

The Board went into two executive sessions where no action was taken.

The next meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, June 8th at 6 p.m. in the President's Conference room.
