BOT Approves New Robotics and Computer Support Specialist Programs
[Garden City, KS] November 16, 2022 -- The Garden City Community College Board of Trustees approved two new programs in Robotics and Computer Support Specialist during the regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, November 15, 2022.
As part of the Title III HSI STEM grant, GCCC sought board approval to add a *Certificate B and AAS in Robotics and a Certificate B and AAS in Computer Support Specialist. The Board of Trustees approved these program offerings to provide pathways for students to study the respective fields:
Robotics:
- *Certificate B and Associate in Applied Science (AAS) - this technical pathway would prepare students for entry into industry immediately after leaving GCCC.
Computer Support Specialist:
- The Certificate B is a 31-credit, two-semester sequence of courses that build on the existing Certificate A option, providing students basic information about information security.
- The AAS (Associate in Applied Science) option is a full, 64-credit, two-year sequence of courses that builds on the Certificate B option.
Students within the Robotics program would be prepared for industry certification in Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA). GCCC will soon submit a formal application for program approval to the Kansas Board of Regents to begin the program in Fall 2023.
Also in conjunction with the Title III HSI STEM grant, GCCC sought approval to expand its current computer science options. Currently, GCCC offers a Certificate A in Computer Support Specialist and Associate in Science transfer pathways in Cybersecurity as well as general Computer Science.
After consulting with the program faculty, division chair, dean, president, and KACCT representative, GCCC decided to draft the Cybersecurity program options with Computer Support Specialist program options. This draft was brought forward to the GCCC Board of Trustees who approved the submission. The application for program approval will be submitted to the Kansas Board of Regents soon.
The next meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at 6 p.m. in the Logan Aviation Endowment Room inside the Beth Tedrow Student Center at GCCC.
