GCCC Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Mike Roth

GCCC Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Mike Roth

[Garden City, KS] May 4, 2023 -- A basketball scholarship and the chance to stay close to family led Dr. Michael "Mike" Roth to attend Garden City Community College from August 1988 through May 1990. He played basketball for two years and worked out with the football team in the spring of '90. GCCC was a smart choice for Roth, he shared, "It was our hometown college, and I followed in the footsteps of both of my sisters, my uncle, and several cousins. Economically, you could not beat the opportunity GCCC provided to all students."

While at Garden City Community College, Roth learned both academic and athletic lessons, "One thing that I learned at GCCC academically was how to study. College was much different than my high school academic career, so transitioning to college through GCCC helped prepare me to study as I advanced through my post-secondary education. Athletically, I learned how to compete at a high level every day because I had some of the most talented and successful teammates."

After GCCC, Roth continued his education at Kansas State University (Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology), Kansas Newman University (Master of Science in Education Administration), Fort Hays State University (Superintendent Certification), and Southwestern College (Doctorate in Education). Dr. Roth currently serves as the Superintendent at USD 453 in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Dr. Roth credits his time at Garden City Community College with his successes, "GCCC contributed to my success because it gave me a foundation to build the rest of my life on. The faculty, my coaches, teammates, and fellow Broncbusters were instrumental in showing me what it takes to be successful. My post-secondary educational journey began at GCCC, and to this day, I would not change a thing based on my positive experience."

He shared his advice for any GCCC student, "Trust your journey because what you can do and learn during two years at GCCC will change your life in so many positive ways. Embrace it, enjoy it, and create life's memories."

Garden City Community College is proud to have played a role in Dr. Roth's success. Make a difference for future Busters by starting your own Endowed Scholarship through the GCCC President's Scholarship Initiative!
