GCCC Student Jessica Murry Named AMT Outstanding RMA Student of the Year

[Garden City, KS] October 6, 2026

Garden City Community College student Jessica Murry has been selected as the recipient of the American Medical Technologists (AMT) Outstanding Registered Medical Assistant Student of the Year Award. This marks the first time a GCCC student has received the prestigious honor.

Murry was nominated for the award by Jami Major, GCCC Assistant Professor of Allied Health, who highlighted her dedication to her studies, commitment to her classmates, and determination to succeed in her healthcare career.

“Jessica is an exceptional student who consistently demonstrates academic excellence, professionalism, leadership, and a true passion for patient care,” Major said. “She is a light in the classroom and undoubtedly a light to the patients she serves. Her compassion, work ethic, and commitment to excellence embody the very best of the healthcare profession.”

Murry successfully completed GCCC's Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT) program and passed her national certification examination on her first attempt. She is currently completing the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) program and is on track to graduate in December.

Throughout her time at GCCC, Murry has balanced her education with full-time employment in the healthcare field. She has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to learning, frequently going beyond course requirements to better understand the concepts and procedures she will use as a healthcare professional.

“Jessica doesn't simply complete an assignment. She wants to understand the ‘why’ behind every procedure and concept,” Major said. “Her curiosity elevates classroom discussions and encourages deeper learning for everyone around her.”

Murry has also become a source of encouragement and support for her classmates. Major said Murry is always willing to lend a hand, share her knowledge, and help create a positive learning environment.

“Jessica makes the students around her better,” Major said. “The field of healthcare needs more individuals like Jessica, and I can think of no student more deserving of this recognition.”

Murry was formally presented with the award at the AMT Central Plains Society Fall Scientific Meeting on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The award highlights both Murry's accomplishments and the strength of GCCC's Allied Health programs, which prepare students for careers in healthcare through hands-on education, clinical experience, and professional training.

GCCC's Allied Health programs include Certified Nurse Aide, Home Health Aide, Certified Medication Aide, Registered Medical Assistant, Registered Phlebotomy Technician, and Community Health Worker. To learn more about Allied Health programs at GCCC, visit gcccks.edu/alliedhealth.
